Our Ash Wednesday service set us off on a unique journey with Jesus to Jerusalem this year. This time of preparation, self-examination and reflection is also a time for our congregation’s journey from our worship space of over twenty years in the fellowship hall into our beautiful new sanctuary (we hope to receive our occupancy permit later this week). Our “trial run” in the new space (our joint worship with Fifth Street CC) was a marvelous time of celebration. Now, during our Lenten journey, we will literally carry our cross and table and banners and everything else into our new sanctuary. This year especially, we are invited to prayerfully walk the way of the cross with Jesus. As we gather for community worship on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, we perform spiritual exercises to prepare for the challenges and celebrations of Holy Week which will begin for us this year with great Hosannas as we officially dedicate our sanctuary before entering the sadness and suffering of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and finally emerge from the darkness into Easter joy. This Lenten season is an especially appropriate time to be mindful about our spiritual practices: daily prayer and Scripture reading, works of compassion and serving our sisters and brothers, and congregational worship.
