Whenever natural disaster occurs anywhere in the world, I am always grateful to know my dollars can help through Week of Compassion. When the earthquake and tsunami struck in South Asia Dec. 26th and reports of devastating loss dominated the media, I knew I could count on WOC to be already at work in the region. WOC has pledged $250,000 toward immediate relief efforts on behalf of the Christian Church (DOC). WOC will fund three of 12 planned Church World Service emergency ship-ments. Each shipment costs $50,000 and includes material aid (food, family shelter kits, medicines, & health/hygiene kits) valued at $500,000. In other words, WOC will provide $150,000 for three ship-ments valued at $1.5 million in emergency material aid! The additional $100,000 will be used to support the $8 million appeal from Action by Churches Together and pleas for aid from our church partners via the Southern Asia Office of Global Ministries. How can we help? Our prayers of solidarity for the people of the region and our partner churches there are crucial. We continue to hear “Please remember us in your prayers.” Clearly, WOC needs designated contributions of members and friends from across the whole church to help meet the goal. As always, all such designated gifts will be used in their entirety for earthquake/tsunami relief. Knowing all contributions really go to relieving the suffering is good news in the midst of such disaster. Shalom, Maureen |
