NEW GMP

The General Board of the Christian Church (DOC) unanimously voted to nominate Dr. Sharon Watkins as our next General Minister and President. The election process will be completed at the General Assembly in Portland, OR July 23-28. Watkins currently pastors a congregation in Bartlesville, OK and has served on the General Board and its Administrative Committees. Read her inspiring remarks to those bodies at www.disciples.org. Kathy Brown served on the search committee.

CELEBRATIONS AND PRAYER CONCERNS

Congratulations to Moses Glay on passing the test and getting his driver’s license! . . . Our sympathy and prayers are with Mildred Whitlow and her extended family on the unexpected death of her nephew Ed Moreland. She, Carolyn Young, Betty McMillan and Maureen Dickmann attended the funeral in St. Louis . . . We give thanks that Mildred Livingston’s grandson Will has been discharged from the Army and we continue to hold his wife Sam in our prayers as she undergoes treatment for a brain tumor . . . Congrats to John Chelleh and Ann Harrell on their successful moves into new homes . . . Kudos to Jordan Carter on being selected to sing in the all state choir . . . Ruth Carter is recovering well from her broken elbow and promises to be playing the violin in worship again soon . . . Michael Coats> and Micheal Hubeny celebrated their commitment to each other with a ceremony at RBCC on May 7 and Lindsey Dusenberry and Sarah Smith are planning a ceremony on May 21st.

SUMMER CAMP UPDATE

Three Rock Bridgers will attend camping events this summer. Tabitha DenHartog and Alexandra Harrell will go on the senior and junior high float trips and Michelle Haas will attend the multi-age camp at Rickman Center. RBCC pays half of each camper’s fees. Donations to help cover this $300 are needed. If you would like to help with these fees, indicate “Camp Fund” on your check. Thanks

OUR DREAM TAKES SHAPE

Reaching to serve; rising to welcome

Our capital campaign is in full swing which Church Extension Vice President Ryan Hazen as our guest preacher on May 1st. He unveiled Church Extension’s Annual Report which features Rock Bridge prominently in word and picture. His message was entitled, Magnificent Building – Tool for Ministry and it inspired a terrific response. We currently have pledges for just over $105,000 – just $6,000 shy of our $111,111.11 goal. The good news is that we have almost 100% participation, including a pledge from a seven-year-old. That means we need to count on Rock Bridgers-at large to help us reach our goal. Our campaign team is conducting the follow-up phase and we plan to celebrate the campaign’s culmination on May 15th as part of our Pentecost Picnic and Mission Fair.

WASTE WATCHERS

Come to the first Friday in June meeting (June 3), raise your consciousness in recycling, reusing, repairing, and renewing resources. Since WW started a year ago, this would be a good time to decide if we want to continue with monthly meetings, change to quarterly meetings, or ? Remember, it all starts with a potluck at 6:30 pm. See you at the June meeting.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Children: During May, the class will work on banners to decorate the Sunday School room.
Teens: The class will meet through the end of May to finish the study on Revelation. This class will not meet through the summer.
Adults: Information on future plans will be forthcoming.

INTERNATIONAL DINNER AND MISSION FAIR

Next Sunday, May 15th, RBCC will celebrate Pentecost with an international potluck dinner and a mission fair.

For the dinner, we are interpreting “international” very loosely. You can go as exotic as roti (a dish served in the Caribbean) or as traditional as German chocolate cake, spaghetti, etc.

At the mission fair, you will have an opportunity to check out information on the missions funded by RBCC. There will be materials from the general ministries of our denomination as well as from the local agencies we support. Hope to see you there.

PENTECOST – Wear red to church next Sunday (May 15th) to help celebrate the birthday of the church!

OFFERING UPDATE

It takes $6,800 every month of general offering income to meet our expenses. Our income for April was $6,579. Also, with the summer months ahead, please remember that our expenses continue through the summer, even when you are not able to make it to church. Our Easter offering these year was $712. This is the second highest Easter offering in the history of RBCC, surpassed only by 2003’s total of $747!

WEEK OF COMPASSION
April 30, 2005

Johnny Wray, director of Week of Compassion, just returned from a delegation that visited Meulaboh, one of the Indonesian communities hardest hit by the tsunami. He writes, “The group was deeply impressed by the work of CWS/Indonesia and the other two ACT partners working in that devastated city. Before I have had a chance to get my photos and thoughts arranged, I received the following photo essay from Petteri Kokkonen and Riitta Saarinen of ACT member, FinnChurchAid. Their essay features many of the same faces and places we saw, and I am pleased to post it here until I can prepare my report.” – jww
