CELEBRATIONS AND PRAYER CONCERNS

We give thanks for a successful angioplasty procedure for Willis Jones and wish him well in cardio rehab. Please keep his grand-daughter Amanda in your prayers as she undergoes treatment for breast cancer . . . Our prayers go with Barbara Allen as she moves to North Carolina to be near her son and his family. She has been a vital member of our congregation and her wisdom will be missed at board meetings – to say nothing of how greatly the Northeast Area will miss her leadership. See her letter to the congregation elsewhere in this newsletter . . . We bid a fond farewell to Amy Jones on December 11th as she moves to Memphis to work for the Living Wage Campaign there for her MSW internship. She promises to come back and see us in May when she receives her degree . . . Winnie Gordon continues therapy in the Lenoir Health Care Center for a broken bone in her foot . . . Our sympathy and prayers are with Moses Glay on the death of his eldest son, also named Moses, in Africa last month. He was only 41 years old . . . The Garcia family enjoyed a trip to Disneyworld over the holidays AND bought a house overlooking Hulen Lake. Congrats! . . . Patrick Buckalew enjoyed his first visit to New York City over the holidays – even the transit strike!

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON AT RBCC

A hardy band of carolers sang at Lenoir (visiting the Health Care Center, the Manor, and the Village) and returned to Rock Bridge for a delicious soup supper. Thanks to the Suhlers, the Garcias, Ann Robinson and friends, Cindy and John Heinz, the DenHartogs, Rich and Kathy, Mandy and Virginia, Maureen, and the Rogers for participating in this event.

This year’s Christmas play was a stunning success as the story of the angel’s visit to Mary and Mary’s to Elizabeth was re-enacted. Special thanks to stalwart directors Ann Robinson, Letitia DenHartog, and Alysa Troetschel. Cast members included Beth Suhler (narrator), Tabi DenHartog (Gabrielle), Dahnya Rogers (Gabby), Gaye Glay (Mary), John Heinz and Debo Glay (children), and Cindy Heinz (Elizabeth). Special music was provided during worship that morning by Dahnya Rogers (violin and piano), Esteli Garcia (violin), John Heinz (bells), and Tabi DenHartog (a capella vocal).

Donations from RBCCers made happier holidays for the families of two sisters of our original Katrina family. Thanks to everyone who helped!

Greetings & Reports from Rock Bridgers-at-Large:

We were delighted to welcome back Keith and Debra Sapp-Yarwood and son Carl Dean (Debra’s play had a reading at MU’s theater department in December). They continue to thrive in KC. Oksana Yakushko, Marcus Flathman and son Kai also surprised us with a visit in December. The Hubbard-McNalls sent pics of Spencer and Elizabeth as they continue to enjoy Oregon. Rita Nakashima Brock’s think tank is keep-ing her busy and on the road (including several visits to Camp Casey, Cindy Sheehan’s protest encampment near Crawford TX). The Friesens sent word that they’re beginning to settle into Austin after spending a month in Greece and Turkey, and were looking forward to having their sons with them for Christmas.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

Our youth will hold soup pots at church doors on Souper Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5th). They will join young people in churches all across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting. In 2005, 11,000 groups in all 50 states and outside the US participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring, generating over $4 million. All of the money collected is donated to a local charity (to be determined). Each participating organization reports their collection to the Souper Bowl headquarters so national totals can be determined and announced. Since the Souper Bowl of Caring became a national grassroots event in 1993, more than $28 million has gone to help those in need. Please support the youth of our church in this effort to “love our neighbors” by dropping your dollar in the soup pot on Feb. 5th.

NEWS FROM WASTE WATCHERS

We begin 2006 with updates on work we were involved in last year. 1) Park Avenue project: We continue to support NO DEMOLITION. Be a “Friend of Public Housing” by signing the NO DEMOLITION proposal in the narthex. 2) Medicaid Crisis: Good News! The Medicaid Reform Initiative Petition is ready for signing (also in the narthex). 120,000 signatures are needed to get this petition on the ballot for the Nov. 2006 general election so voters can decide what kind of healthcare system is needed in Missouri. WW continues to meet on the 1st Friday of the month @ 6:30 pm (next meeting is Feb. 3rd) for a potluck followed by thought-provoking discussion and action for social justice. Plan to come monthly.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?- GOD

We’ve always known that Rock Bridge CC has good reception – well, now it will be even better. RBCC is entering into an agreement with Verizon to place a cell tower on the west side of the shed. This will provide some much needed monthly income for the building and general funds for up to the next 25 years. There will be a fence and landscaping around the tower, and it will display banners designed by former Rock Bridger Philip Cox-Johnson.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE

The RBCC Board meets at 7 pm Wed., Jan 11th. All are welcome.

LETTER FROM BARBARA ALLEN

Dear Friends at Rock Bridge Christian Church,

As I prepare to move to North Carolina, I couldn’t leave without expressing my gratitude and love to you who have been so caring and supportive of me over these seven plus years. It has been a joy to worship and share in fellowship with you. You’ve made me feel a part of your mission and values as I have served on the board. I so believe in what Rock Bridge stands for!

I regret I won’t get to see our finished sanctuary, but I will be thinking of all of you as you prepare for the dedication. I will always keep all of you in my heart and prayers.

With my love,
Barbara

P.S. A special thanks to the elders who have been bringing my shut-in communion. They have been very special times.
